in which I eat like a pig

I was recently challenged by The SITS Girls to write a review about something that I couldn't live without.  At first, I thought to myself, there is nothing that I can't live without.  At least, nothing I can write a review on.  But, then, I stopped for Krispy Kreme doughnuts one evening and that all changed.

Mr. Hull had a bad toothache, so I decided to take Baby Kate out on the town while he took a Lortab and had a bit of a rest.  Yes-- Lortab.  It was a hellish toothache with no hope of immediate relief and I forced him to swallow a pill from my not-so-secret stash left over from the birth of my daughter.  okay?  We're not druggies, I promise.  So, anyway, Katie and I drove out to visit the Dollar Store and then I had the wonderful idea of going all the way across town for "Hot Now" Krispy Kreme doughnuts.  Yum!

I pulled into the lot and waltzed inside with my daughter.  Even Katie was overwhelmed by the smell.  "Yummies!" she cried, excitedly.  We ordered our box of a dozen hot ones and retreated to the car for a snack.

Now, there are several varieties of doughnuts available in my hometown.  We have two Dunkin Donuts and a lovely local joint called Blue Collar Joe's (a great place to take out-of-town guests for unique cake doughnuts).   But, both of those establishments pale in comparison to the delight one feels when biting into a melt-in-your-mouth hot glazed Krispy Kreme doughnut.  The icing is so fresh it hasn't had time to go gooey, the pastry is hot and squishy, and the taste is out of this world.  You really can't eat just one.  In fact, my family has been known to devour a whole dozen on the ride home. And, that was when we were a family of three.  Who knows what sort of damage we'll be able to do in a few years' time.

What I liked best about our latest doughnut run?  The lady behind the counter was so happy and cheerful, not at all irritated by the presence of customers like one might find at a typical chain restaurant.  Plus, she threw in a free itty-bitty doughnut which was the perfect size for Katie.  And, since Mr. Hull was knocked out by his pain-killer, I had the whole dozen to myself.  Diet be damned!
