Throwback Thursday: Where's Granny?

joanrivers.jpgJoan Rivers, comedienne, mother, and grandmother, is older than dirt, and obviously trying to hide her age.  She is the perfect example of the “new” woman.  You know the type.  She shops in the juniors section, though she is likely five times a junior.  She visits the hair salon and comes away with a new ‘do that would be more appropriate for someone half her age.  She’ll take time away from work and come back with an entirely new, plastic, face. She parties regularly, living it up, pretending to be a sex kitten, though she has multitudes of grandchildren.  Though way past her prime, she still looks, acts, and pretends to be a twenty-something.  Why is 60 the new 40, and how is this appropriate?  What happened to the little gray-haired ladies?  Have they been kidnapped, only to be replaced by fake, plastic women who can’t even really smile?  Why are we torturing ourselves like this?  Why are we so afraid to look our age?
There is something quaint about growing old gracefully, rather than hiding behind layers of hair dye and botox.   Though she had gray hair and wrinkles, my granny did not “let herself go.”  She may have resisted dying her hair, but she fixed it and wore makeup everyday.  She was the quintessential “little old lady,” if only in appearance.  She proved that, though you are old, you can still eat, drink, and be merry, while still accepting your age.  More women should get over the fact that they are just plain old and accept the changes that come with their age.

  1. Hear hear! I don't understand botox and face lifts, i don't want to look 40 when I'm 60, or 20 when i'm 40. What is wrong with getting old?

  2. I don't think there's anything wrong with getting old. My mother is already after me to dye my smattering of gray hair. I can only assume it is so she doesn't look any older. You know, she "couldn't possibly" be old enough to have a daughter who is going gray. Sad thing is, I'm only 27. It makes me wonder what color her hair really is.
